SM3: Sustainability Management Maturity Model
FairRidge Group's Sustainability Management Maturity Model, SM3, provides a framework of best practices and a roadmap for business sustainability transformation. It's the core of what we do.As individuals we want to do the right thing – but in business, we are challenged by the overriding need to be profitable. The goal of sustainability is to do both: to improve your competitive differentiation and profitability today, while not compromising resources for future generations.
Our Sustainability Management Maturity Model - SM3 - provides a systems-approach that enables you to assess how well your company can respond to, develop, manage, and report on sustainability issues and opportunities, illustrates where you are today and identifies a path to the next level. When used with our corresponding SMI workshops and/or consulting services, SM3 helps you make sustainability strategic to your organization and accelerate business transformation. Your business’s level of maturity is dependent on your aspiration to do the right thing – allowing you to differentiate in a rapidly changing business landscape.
Sustainability Management Maturity Model
SM3 describes the 5 levels of maturity that a company moves through on its journey to becoming a more environmentally and socially responsible company:
SM3 has 5 levels of maturity:
- Level 1 - Recognize
You recognize the need to address sustainability, but you’re currently not active in that regard. - Level 2 - Initiate:
You have a sustainability sponsor, are assessing industry trends, building awareness, and have a base-line environmental footprint. - Level 3 - Pilot
You have created a sustainability function, developed a strategy, and are piloting some eco-efficiency initiatives. - Level 4 - Operationalize
You are engaging the business units who have integrated sustainability into their business strategy, processes and performance measurement. - Level 5 - Transform
You fully embrace sustainability as a way of doing business; it drives innovation and business transformation
By assessing where you are on six management components (Strategy, Organization, Process, Measurement, People, & Marketing) you can determine your overall level of sustainability management maturity. The SM3 can be used to develop a customized roadmap for moving to the next level, and ultimately to achieving the level of business sustainability transformation that makes sense for your company.
